Bassmasters

Prostaff member Josh Taylor with keeper St. John's River bass.We all strive to be the best we can be on the water and sometimes we surprise even ourselves, and other times we hang our heads as we idle in to the dock. I have learned at a young age that I will not always load the boat every trip but I have also learned to have fun with every outing and learn from each trip. We are going to talk about how to be your own Bassmaster and live the dream within yourself.

I remember walking across the bridge of my childhood house and seeing fish swimming around beneath it. I ran full speed back to the house and asked my grandpa who was visiting from Florida to take me fishing. He of course smiled and said, “O.K. let’s go”. What I was about to experience would be life changing and start a fire that is still burning in my soul today. I remember like it was yesterday, “Now make a good cast and hold on.”said my grandpa. I watched my little red bobber with the utmost of anticipation and suddenly it happened! “Set the hook,” my grandpa yelled as my float disappeared. After what seemed like forever I finally reeled my first big catch up to the bridge, a five inch sunfish. Yes, that’s right it was a five inch red eared sunfish that started me out on a long road of priceless memories.

There are many aspects of fishing that are of great importance. I believe without a shadow of a doubt the most important thing we as fisherman can do is take someone and share the feeling that we once felt. It all started for me because my grandpa took a few minutes of his time to share the wonderful experience of fishing. I feel it is our obligation to pass on this ageless pastime. Have you ever noticed when fishing people are alot more courteous? I always try and give a wave to fellow boaters. It just seems everyone changes when on the water. Could it be that fishing just soothes our soul and puts us in a state of complete relaxation? I believe it does and that’s worth sharing.

When you hear the word Bassmaster you normally think of someone other than yourself, right? Well, maybe you should give yourself some credit. You can be a Bassmaster in your own right. I always ask God to reveal things to me each trip I take on the water. I feel I can learn something every time I make a cast. I used to fish with a negative attitude when not catching fish but soon learned to bury that feeling if I wanted to become a better angler. As I grew and matured as a fisherman I boated alot more fish and had more fun than ever before. Not to mention my wife was alot happier! Something about me throwing rods she  did not like. I have learned to take the ups and downs of fishing and keep a positive attitude. If you believe you will catch fish your hookups will drastically increase and this will help you to become your own Bassmaster.

The next time you go out for a day on the water remember to be thankful that someone once took you fishing. If it were not for them you may not be the Bassmaster you are today. You don’t have to catch fish to become a great fisherman you just need to believe in the sport and always take time to share it!
