Fishing Reels: Searching for quality
I feel the most important aspect of fishing is the quality of your product. You can prepare for any type of situation that mother nature can throw at you. You can read all the articles and watch all the shows to gain all the knowledge possible but it all comes down to the quality of your product. I know many fisherman who spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars on boating and fishing equipment but refuse to spend the money for a high quality reel. This is like ordering sweet tea without the sugar, it just does’nt work. We are going to discuss how to find the quality reel you are looking for.
The first thing I look for is the quality of the frame. A metal frame will allow you to feel more of what’s under the water. A metal frame also gives you more sensitivity and the ability to feel subtle bites. A good quality frame is paramount when searching for a reel with great durability. These type reels will stand up to any element you will face. The reel seat is also important a metal reel seat can really improve your hook setting power.
I always hear people talking about bearings and the number one mistake people make is assuming that more bearings make a better reel. This is not always true. It is the quality of the bearings that make the difference. There are several reels on the market that have an abundant amount of bearings that make them look the part. I have three reels I use for the majority of my fishing, a Pinnacle Peak GS 7.0, Pinnacle Pro Select, and a Pinnacle Matrix. These are all reels that are made of metal and have very quality bearings. Smoothness, durability and being able to handle quality fish is key.
Another aspect of a reel that can really become important is the weight. A heavy reel can be uncomfortable after fishing for long periods. A light reel is proved more sensitive and can give you the edge you need when fishing deep water or making long casts when you need to set the hook from long distance. Comfort-ability is a must for those long days on the water. Choose a reel that will make it easy on you, the more things you can do to make your day on the water more enjoyable do it!
One of the most critical things to consider is a reel with a good cast control mechanism. I prefer the magnetic and centrifugal magnetic cast control that is featured in many Pinnacle reels. This allows you to really dial in the lure your using and cast it more effectively. Backlashes take to much precious time on the water so the more you can do to eliminate them the better. I recommend setting the controls at a high number, say 6 to 8. Make several casts to get familiar with your reel then you can adjust the settings to your preference.
Gear ratios also play a factor in your reel selection. A low gear ratio, for example 5.2 is made for taking in less line which forces your bait to be fished slower. This also helps the angler not fish certain baits to fast. This ratio is a must for a multitude of conditions and techniques. The most popular gear ratio is 6.3. This ratio covers many applications and Is what I would recommend for the majority of your fishing. It enables you to fish relatively slow or pick up your pace and fish faster baits. There are times when you have a need for speed, this is when you go to 7.0 gear ratio. A 7.0 is extremely fast and takes in line very quickly. This enables you to fish very fast and cover water more quickly. The 7.0 takes in nearly 30 inches of line per handle turn. So I recommend stocking up on a few of each which will make you that much more versatile.
