Fishing Reels: How To Keep Them In Good Working Order

It is common sense that a well oiled machine will perform better than a rusty one. This will prove to be true with your fishing reels as well. I will even tell you that I do not spend as much time as I should cleaning my equipment but it will really extend the life of your product. Let’s take a look at some simple reel maintenance.

First you should always wipe down your rods and your reels after each trip. This will keep water spots from forming and also cut down on build up from dirt and other particles. Simple care for your gear can go along way. Most of today’s quality reels will have a maintenance guideline with your reel at purchase. Make sure you follow these tips for keeping your reel clean and well kept. Reels of today are a large investment so treat them well and they will perform.

When it comes to taking your reels apart make sure you have a guideline on how to reassemble them. This can be frustrating if you get your parts mixed up. Lubrication is very important when cleaning your reels. Try not to use to much this may make buildup of dirt worse. Just apply enough lubrication to keep it moistened. Also when you apply your lubrication be sure and steer clear of the spool. This may cause unwanted odors on your line and fish will turn up their nose at your bait! Make sure you store your rods and reels in a dry area out of the sun. This can cause major damage to your reels frame and coating. Although some areas of the country do not get as cold as others but if you fish where there’s ice you should always dry out your reels when finished fishing. I have fished on many occasions with ice on my guides. This can damage your rods and your reels. Always dry them out and re-lube them.

I know the last thing you want to do after a day on the water is clean your rods and reels but it will save you alot of money  in the future. As much time and energy as we spend out there each year we can always take a little time for our equipment. As well built as most reels are today it does not take much to keep them like new. I know the Pinnacle reels I use require little maintenance and are very easy to disassemble and reassemble. That’s what makes a quality reel being able to be durable and withstand the elements. Pinnacle reels have proven to be tough and very reliable I would not use them if they let me down. I work to hard on the water and at home preparing for fishing trips to be let down by my equipment.

So next time you take a trip and get finished catching all those fish give your rods and reels a little TLC. Your reels are your number one piece of equipment when catching fish so treat them well. Remember a simple cleaning goes along way!
